The Story:
Photography is my way of remembering all the important events in my life, or moments that I never want to forget. Ever since I was young, I took a liking to photography – I loved being able to play with my dad’s “fancy” camera, as I called it. I used to make my sister get all dressed up and pretend to be a model while I took pictures. I was never any good at drawing or painting, so taking pictures became my creative outlet. And when my grandma took up scrapbooking, it simply reinforced my love of arts, crafts, and pictures – she taught me how to take the pictures I loved and turn them into something even more memorable with matching pages that made pictures pop, and journaling to explain the significance of those pictures.
Over the past few years, I have realized how important it is to hang onto these memorable moments any way you can – and for me pictures serve as a visual reminder. As you age you start to forget things, and having pictures to look back on bring these memories back to your conscious brain. After having a family member with dementia, it is amazing to see how showing pictures can trigger certain memories of people that they seem to have forgotten. So these pictures remind me not only of my favourite times and things, but they also cause emotions to flood back into me, making me feel as if I'm back at that exact spot taking the picture all over again.
